Tuesday Morning Update: Beason, Finley

Some things you may have missed….

From Rotoworld: ESPN New York reports the Giants have “discussed a long-term deal” with free agent MLB Jon Beason:
“Beason bounced back to full health last season, but graded out as just the No. 47 inside linebacker in Pro Football Focus’ ratings. Now 29, his lengthy injury history makes him a poor candidate for either the franchise tag or a long-term deal. Unless the Giants can get Beason locked up at a team-friendly price, he’ll likely reach the open market.”

Fennelly: From what we gather, Beason does not want to leave New York now that he’s here. Money may not be Beason’s sole motivation this time around, so that team-friendly deal may be enough to keep him in Blue.

He’s already scored big financially in the NFL, signing and receiving a five-year, $50 million deal from the Panthers in 2011. Beason got $25 million of that cash up front in guarantees. At the time, it was the richest deal ever for a middle linebacker.

ESPN.com blogger Rob Demovsky is reporting that impending free agent TE Jermichael Finley is up to 260 lbs.

“Although he has been listed in the Packers media guide at 247 pounds for each of his six NFL seasons, the reality is he’s changed his body several times over.

In 2010, Finley said his weight was down to 235 pounds because he wanted to be used more like a receiver rather than a tight end. He played light in 2011 before deciding to get bigger again. Last summer in training camp, Finley said he was 10 pounds heavier than he was in 2012 and was probably closer to the 247 pounds the Packers list him at. Now, it appears he’s intent on getting even bigger. “

Fennelly: Finley is said to be on the Giants’ radar as he is familiar with Ben McAdoo’s system. The doctors have yet to clear Finley for action. He is determined to make it back from neck fusion surgery and is working out like a demon. Demovsky reports that the Packers will likely look to re-sign Finley if and when he is cleared.

The injury could keep the Giants and other teams away. The Giants are already familiar with neck procedures having RB David Wilson going through it right now. Historically, the Giants’ medical team has been more stringent in their diagnoses than other clubs, so even when Finley gets cleared the Giants may choose not pursue him.

The Philadelphia 76'er should do everything they can and get a trade with Knicks for Amare.

Here are the reason why.

  • They have no offense and that Amare strong point
  • Give their fans one person to come to games
  • Amare can mentor the young team
  • Could resign him at a reasonable rate after season
  • Amare would relish the role of been #1 again leading a young team
  • Amre still have some juice left in the tank
Knicks benefits
  • Stock up on draft picks or receive a young talent
  • immediate cap relief
  • More playing time for bigs to develop without worrying about Amare playing time
  • More ball movement in triangle offense

It would be damn shame to let Jon Beason hit the open market.  I could care less who ranks him where, all they need to do is watch the games to see his impact.  The run defense was spectacular because of the work he did.  He is flat out the best linebacker they have had since Jessie Armstead. Yes No. 98 played outside linebacker not inside.

For an inside backer you have to go back to Pepper Johnson.  Either way, Beason is a necessary part to making this defense go forward.

@Skyrider

WHY IT WOULD NOT BE A GOOD IDEA FOR THE SIXERS

- Sixers want the 1st pick in the draft, see tanking season

- Amare doesn't want to play on a loser and will bolt after the season is over.

-Sixers have no match salary wise to make a trade with the Knicks

-Amare might help the Knicks if he stays healthy and the team gets their act together.
