Sunday Morning Update: Giants in position to land a top player in draft

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Offensive linemen and tight ends took the field yesterday at the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The three top lineman – Auburn’s Greg Robinson, Jake Matthews of Texas A&M and Taylor Lewan of Michigan – all performed as advertised. The first two will surely be gone by the time the Giants select at No. 12 in this year’s draft. Lewan could be gone as well. He looked impressive.

In the TE drills, I personally think the Giants have a shot at one of my top two: Notre Dame’s Troy Niklas or CJ Fiedorowicz of Iowa. Both players helped themselves yesterday as did Texas Tech’s Jace Amaro. All three of these guys remind me a bit of Kevin Boss – big guys with good hands who can get that extra yardage after the catch.

Giants’ GM Jerry Reese told reporters that he will let DE Justin Tuck, WR Hakeem Nicks and LB Jon Beason test the free agent market. Reese also said the Giants would be patient where they needed to be, saying there will be good players to be had in the “second and third wave” of free agency.

researching all the mock drafts and listening to GM Jerry Reese, it's hard to determine which direction he will go in the 1st round.  Also, the depth at OT and TE in this years draft is deep, perhaps the only other position arguably deeper is the WR position. My point here is that the Giants have many needs (OL,TE,RB,CB,WR,DL). To me, it doesn't make sense to draft a player in the 1st round from a position of strength. In my opinion, the Giants should draft a player on defense in the 1st rd and then address the other positions through rounds 2-6 (not counting compensatory pick or picks). There are quality OL through rounds 2-6 that will improve the Giants OL. The same can be said at the WR position and also the TE spot. Let's not forget free agency as Reese can address some of these needs that way. Once the free agency phase is through, we will all have a better idea in which direction Reese will go in the draft.

i would try and sign beason and not let him see fa, he wants to stay here give him the chance and see if he might give the jints a home discount no harm in trying.

Mr.F---

This Draft is Much to Deep at TE,

to waste a 2nd or 3rd round Pick....

AnyWay, REESE put's ZERO importance in the TE Position...

1. OT --2. OC/OG,  will be BEST for the Offense, & the NYG's Future...

1st Round, will have a Run on QB's -- OT's -- OLB's -- WR's -- CB's

the Way i C it---

Someone will trade into the TOP 8...

first 8 picks... (not in this Order)

1. QB J. Manziel

2. QB T. Bridgewater

3. QB Blake Bortles

4. DE J. Clowney

5 WR S. Watkins

6. OT Jake Matthews

7. OT G. Robinson

8. OLB K. Mack

Team Need / BPA

***9th Buffalo OT T. Lewan***

***10th Lion's CB D. Dennard

***11th Titans OLB C.J. Mosley / O-Line

12th REESE, B.P.A.-- DT Ra'Shede Hageman.............sad

I can understand letting Nicks and Tuck test free agency, but I'm not sure why he would do the same with Beason. Beason proved that he is still a very good player, and he shored up many of the Giants LB deficiencies after his arrival here. To trade a 7th round pick for him only to let him walk away this year would be stupid. Just another waste of a draft pick if that happened.

I"m sorry, but if those guys reminded you of Kevin Boss, no way, no how should the Giants even entertain drafting them in the first few rounds.

While boss was a nice plyaer his is not a game changer.

I'd rather draft a future potential pro bowler than a serviceable starter on D just because other positions are "deeper". No player is a guarantee to pan out in the NFL- so taking a less talented player on purpose probably isn't a smart gamble

@cole3244

REESE already give LB Beason, a LOW Ball Offer,

Thats Why he is going to TEST the FA Market,

REESE Can't afford LB Beason,

But ,

I knew this in Oct...... and SO did REESE...

and YOU should have Known, Also....

..........the DARK YEARs are HERE---

@cole3244  ....  I just doubt he'd give much of a discount, because he's barely played many games for the Giants in his career compared to Carolina.

@spider43

Aaaaaaaa.... i said that in OCT....

Plus, LB Beason,

was the TOP factor,

in the GIANTs WINNING Games,

only Hurting the NYG's Draft Slot....

We should be DRAFTing 8th....

that's 4 PLAYERs EVERY ROUND !!!

we don't have ACCESS to.....

This shows REESE, ONLY Got LB Beason,

to SAVE his GM JOB !!!

what a SELFISH CLOWN...

@Lee Lewin  A healthy Boss was a nice weapon. Good blocker, too, but u are right they probably won't take a TE in the first 3 rounds, which is where these guys will go.

@Lee Lewin  .... Would prefer Ebron to any of them at TE, but would be more than happy to have Nicklas if he was available in the 2nd or 3rd round.

@JamesWS I never implied the Giants should take a less talented player, there are extremely gifted players on the defensive side of the ball that will be available at #12 in the 1st round for the Giants that their overall position is not as deep as other mentions such as: WR, OL, TE. GM Reese not only needs to draft well in round 1, but also through rds 2-6 (not counting possible compensatory pick or picks); which he hasn't done well in the last two drafts. Like you mentioned in your above response "No player is a guarantee to pan out in the NFL:. That statement also holds true on future potential pro bowlers in the 1st round

@Skookaloop @spider43 ...Any GM that goes to work every day and tries to demoralize and not try to improve his team so he can get a better draft pick needs to stay home and sell Amway. I would've even been happy with the 24-25th pick and that would've meant that he didn't need Beason and there was some major progress in some of his draft flops. Also would've been a better morale booster, better locker room atmosphere and overall better team. ...Possibly the playoffs. Do I think Reese has made good choices in the past few years in the draft?...absolutely not. Do I agree with his evaluation of talent on this team?...no way....He annoyed me the other day when he stated after all this past season flubs that the Giants could possibly draft another QB.....I about threw the mouse through the monitor...I'm still mad about yagi dagi the so called raw talent in progress..Nassib.
