Saturday Morning Shootaround: Nicks No. 88 no longer

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Some things of note on this beautiful Saturday morning…

Most people will be shocked if the Giants don’t grab one of these big TEs in the draft in three weeks. In his latest mock, ESPN draftnik Mel Kiper, Jr. is mocking UNC’s Eric Ebron to the Giants at No.12. Very few would be disappointed should the Giants take him. They need a big receiver to go over the middle and up the seam and that is exactly what Ebron does best. I’ll take it.

In Round Two, Kiper believes the Giants will snare UCLA OL Xavier Su’a-Filo, a player we haven’t talked about much and one that may be gone by the time the Giants pick at No. 43.

The Indianapolis Colts won’t be giving Hakeem Nicks his traditional number 88 jersey when it comes time to suit up next week. The number isn’t officially retired by the Colts, but they are reserving it in honor of their great WR Marvin Harrison and the late Hall of Fame TE John Mackey. Nicks will be wearing No. 14 instead. (PFT)

The Giants begin their offseason workouts on Monday. “Phase 1″, as it’s being called, will run through May 4th and the activities will be limited to strength, conditioning and rehab.

If JR wound up on a West team......Jerry would have bought him a ticket home and brought him to the airport himself.  Appreciate West but he never inherited a mess like this.  And I believe the culture Jerry West would have brought in from day 1 would have been one with no place for JR [the NY JR not the one with no distractions,Cleveland JR....Imagine JR in Hollywood? Yikes]....not even he could have found a market solely for that JR.....So great for JR...and Shump.

CLE-GSW series shows value of low post scoring. GSW has none and it shows.

We all know melo isn't lebron but lebron can win a championship with d leaguers and old Knicks that melo wasn't able to get out of the lottery with.

I wanted the melo trade but the biggest mistake was resigning melo a max player No matter who is around them should at the minimum compete for an 8th seed. I no he was injured but when he was healthy we weren't any better

Melo better be watching these finals and realizing he needs to step the F up

Off topic question as well... After these first 3 games anybody still think we should try to sign Draymond Green to a max deal? My point is be careful in investing on some of these players who will wilt under pressure or after they get paid. Keep the 4th pick invest in Monroe, Dragic if you can and put out smart low risk deals to other free agents

An off the topic question, hypothetically, if we drafted Winslow in the draft and we signed both Monroe and Rondo in free agency, do we have a player on this roster with a cap hold that can play a Reggie Evans kind of role.and clean up the boards? Whether its Acy or someone else?

I said hypothetically, my prediction is still Winslow in the draft and they sign Monroe, Robin Lopez and Patrick Beverley in free agency and they take a chance on Andrew Bynum as well.

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare Patrick Beverley at 5 mill.we need that defensive point guard in the east to lock down John Wall ,Kyrie Irving,D Rose and Brandon Jennings LoL...

I know and their rumored to be involved in Aldridge as well as a DeAndre Jordan sign and trade where Tyson Chandler and Felton go the other way....all we can do is take a shot at it.....

I would much rather deal Hardaway and Calderon for Brandon Jennings' expiring contract to get Calderon's money off the books but I am going to assume we can't do that, unless we trade down to 8, so I am going to guess Beverley is the guy we get.

I think in fairness u have to give Phil Jackson this summer and next summer to see what he can do before you judge him, this past season was a free ride for him, but now work starts for Phil, the honeymoon is over.

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare he had this season and almost half of the season before. He had last summer too. I give him this summer but he certainly can be judged on what he has done so far which is mess everything he tries up.  I hope he redeems himself but putting together a compelling team, but so far no-good.

I know bro and I understand, but I am almost forced to believe in Phil because u know if Jackson does not work here....the next one coming is Isiah....and I don't want Isiah back.....

It's true that it isn't fair to evaluate Jackson yet, we need to give him the full off-season to see what the team looks like......but....he has been saying lately that he needs a big defense minded center, and I'm thinking of a guy who fits that description, and did help Dallas make the playoffs, whom we traded for Calderon. I don't have a problem with trading Chandler (or anyone) but it doesn't seem like Phil has a clear vision of how to fix this team. If we were trading to get better then why would we have given up Chandler when we really didn't have another center and if we were dumping salary and rebuilding why didn't we just accumulate draft picks. I know he was using Chandler to get rid of Felton, but in retrospect I would rather have Felton and Dallas's draft pick than Calderon, who by the way, is making a large salary as well. Same goes for JR and Shump. We could have traded everyone and accumulated as many draft picks as possible. Geez Mozgov was traded for two picks! The other thing that people aren't considering is that many players stay with their teams now rather than test free agency because they can get so much more money. If Jackson traded all those guys and got draft picks he would have fewer holes to fill. However what if he makes his one draft pick and there are most players whose contracts are up resign, what did he gain with all the cap space? Just sayin'....

Odd that West compared Phil to Riley.  Either he doesnt know that it took Riley 12 years to win a ring in Miami or he thinks that Phill has been in NY for many years

He' didn't damn him he just said what is true, and then praised him.  West is one of the great GMs, Phil is now trying to enter that fraternity and his fellow GMs have every right to call it for what it is.  Now it's up to Phil to show Jerry and all of us what he can do as an exec

mrxman

Here we go  again another writer wanting to give phil a free pass, I wish my boss would have gave me a year to screw up before i started doing a few things right. OH wait I dont make 12 million dollars a year!!! If you and phil could not see calderon play sliping in the last three years time o do something esle!!

@demetra @mrxman none as an exec, and one guy who's the godfather of all basketball execs just busted Phils chops. Phil doesn't have any rings as an exec. He may have a few more gray hairs and a bigger gut from the NY life but no rings as President of Basketball Operations.  Or should I say President of Men's Basketball Ops?

Seems like an over simplistic view of these trades from a guy as smart as West.  Clearly these moves were made with the Knicks future in mind, not to improve this season.  They were getting rid of guys they had no interest in retaining.  Whether those trades helped Cleveland or Dallas is really irrelevant.

@cj1786 If there was every a GM who has the right to discuss other GM's it;s West.

Also West and Jax did not have a wonderful relationship in LA. Staples Center was not big enough to fit both egos.  West one of the great GM's, Jax still falling off his  executive training wheels
