NFL Combine 2014

Monday Morning Update: Giants show interest in Michael Sam

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

The NFL Combine will be wrapping up in Indianapolis the next few days and thus far there have been few surprises. Over the years, teams have been getting better at reconnaissance and vetting. Even if a highly-touted player underperforms, his draft stock is likely to remain high.

It’s the players that have limited portfolios that really benefit from this. The game at hand remains football, however. For instance, South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney only did 21 reps on the bench press. That subpar showing won’t change his value at all. He will still be taken in the first hour of this May’s NFL Draft.

The Giants need quality offensive linemen fast and this draft is loaded with them. It also helps that they are drafting higher than they have since 2004.

“I thought those three offensive tackles [Saturday] were spectacular,” said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock.  “[Greg] Robinson from Auburn, [Jake] Matthews and [Taylor] Lewan. I thought they all had good days. [Xavier] Su’a- Filo from UCLA looked really good, [David] Yankey from Stanford looked good.”

Most of the TEs looked serviceable. I compared several of them to former Giant TE Kevin Boss, which a reader reminded me was not a reason to use a high draft pick on any of them. From Mayock:

“The tight ends were a little disappointing. They were beat up a little bit from some injury stuff with them; the Notre Dame kid [Troy Niklas] was only about 80 percent, couldn’t do a 40. [Jace] Amaro didn’t run as fast as I thought he would run. [Colt] Lyerla, the kid from Oregon who I thought was going to be a little bit more explosive, didn’t run as fast or catch as well. The tight ends I think there are still a lot of question marks.”

Here are some more observations from around the net….

Ebenezer Samuel of the Daily News reports the Giants have visited with Missouri DE Michael Sam. Others the Giants met with this week: WRs Mike Evans (Texas A&M), Marquise Lee (USC), and Paul Richardson (Colorado), OLs Zack Martin (Notre Dame), Cyrus Kouandjio (Alabama) and Joel Bitonio (Nevada), TEs Eric Ebron (North Carolina) and Jace Amaro (Texas Tech), speedster De’Anthony Thomas (Oregon) and RB Ka’Deem Carey (Arizona).

Newsday’s Tom Rock writes the Giants could use a top pick on a big WR such as Mike Evans or FSU’s Kelvin Benjamin:

“Evans and Benjamin in particular have the size the Giants have coveted in the past. Evans is 6-5, 231 pounds; Benjamin is 6-5, 240. (USC’s Marquise) Lee, who is 5-11, 195 pounds, might be too similar to Victor Cruz for the Giants to take him.

They also have speed. Evans posted a 4.46 in the 40-yard dash, and Benjamin said he grew up chasing rabbits and catching them with his bare hands. Former Giants first-round pick David Wilson also did that.”

I think the most frustrating kid at the combine has gotta be Colt Lyerla, his combine numbers have been awesome, he's got the size, speed and athletic ability to be a total monster in the NFL, but he's such a liability off the field that it's pretty damn scary to even think about drafting him, he's one of those "top 10 talent" guys that probably would've been a 6th or 7th rd guy, after his performance saturday i wouldn't be shocked to see him go as early as the 4th.

My draft Order (no FA consideration)

1) Watkins

2) Evans

3) Lewan

4) Ebron

5) Dennard

If they get Mack and a veteran Guard or Tackle than I would move Ebron into the #3 slot. I hope Watkins falls but I would be very happy with Evans, assuming that McAdoo likes big WRs. If they upgrade WR, TE and OL in FA (James Jones, Dennis Pitta or Quarless, Mack and Brandon Albert), then to me Denard would be a great selection at 12.

Sam is a 3rd down Pass-Rusher , Period...

He is Quick off the Line, thats it,

ZERO coverage Skill, Stiff Hips....

a TWEENER,

OK for College,

when you have a 105 man Roster,

Not so good for the NFL's, 53 man Roster...

better for a 3-4, NOT a 4-3....

Sam has a 5th-6th-7th, round Value, at Best....

Who needs a 1 down Tweener / Special Teamer ???

Not the GIANTS !!!

we should get a quality player at 12 but do not reach for a position of need bpa no matter who that may be.

@Brian Bannon

I have Mocked TE Colt up as a 6th or 7th round NYG TE Pick...

His off the Field issues, will made him a WildCard....

@Peter Sinapi that's a lot of money you're suggesting the Giants spend on those FA. I doubt the Giants will over spend the $$$

You can give up on that Watkins pipe dream. Short of a discovery of him being a pill popper, an Axe - murderer or a qb bonanza, this guy could easily go in the top three (rams). Worst case scenario, he goes top five.

Evans may also be out of our grasp too which only helps to increase the likelihood that Ebron falls to the giants or a stud linema. That said, I'd personally spend the first pick on a playmaker and go o-line in fa.

BPA is a MYTH.....

completely subjective....

REESE has proven his Drafting Skills are Sub-Par....

DE-JPP -- RB D. Wilson -- OL J.Pugh:

ALL not BPA...

the last BPA REESE took in the 1st Round,

was CB PRINCE.....

@Skookaloop  the only reason you love kyle long is because he went to the pro bowl...as an alternate. never mind the fact that he was considered a reach as well.

@Peter Sinapi

Pugh was a great NEED !!!

Not BPA...

and i think MR. Long,

the Guy picked after Pugh..

Who went to a equally bad O-Line,

Da'Bears

went to the Pro-Bowl.....son

I never wanted JPP,

I wanted OC M. Pouncey...since Draft Day....

Never was Impressed with JPP....

he's NEVER been in Football SHAPE...

Spastic Energy,

is Wasted Energy....

...will never be a 3 Down, DE...

Mid 2nd Rounder....

He was a Project ALL Year 1...

....a bad Reach---

REESE Should Draft FOOTBALL PLAYERs

in the 1st ROUND...

NOT,

a high UP-Side,

2-3 years down the Road, Kinda Player...

BTW,---BPA

got you QB Nassib,

with 2 Draft PICKS, LMAO !!!

Pugh was a great pick. A reach? how many starting RTs that we're offensive 1st team were taken after him? Giants would have been dead without Pugh last year.

As for JPP it's easy to say he stinks now by what was your opinion of him 2 years ago?

@Peter Sinapi

JPP was a REACH for a 1st Rounder,

PROJECT PLAYER,

JPP had 1 good Year,

With OSI & TUCK....

Zero since then....

How Many Games has JPP played in ???

Bad Value....

Pugh was also a Reach at 19th,

He is a Very Good Player,

but NOT BPA....

TE T, Eifert

CB D. Trufant

CB R. Xavier

DT Sharrif Floyd

ILB A. Ogletree

FS Matt Elam

OC T. Fredricks

DT S. Willams

WR D. Hopkins

... where all taken after Pugh...
