Corey Washington the talk of camp so far

There is no question the breakout star of Giants camp thus far has been WR Corey Washington, who has two TD receptions in the Giants’ first two preseason games and is regularly beating the Giants’ newly-revamped secondary in practice.

Corey Washington“He is a guy that came in as one of the smaller school guys, and wasn’t getting reps at first and then just exploded,” CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie told reporters on Tuesday. “Even in practice he was making some big catches against the ones, twos and threes. It didn’t matter who was out there. He tends to find himself jumping over people, so he is definitely a gifted young man.”

The 6’4″ Washington’s performance has quelled some of the fears the club has had over their depth at WR. With first round pick Odell Beckham, Jr. who just started practicing after missing over two months with a sore hamstring; and Mario Manningham, returning after two seasons in San Francisco, having a rough camp (dropping passes and simply looking rusty), Washington is filling the void and then some.

The Giants needed someone to step up and make some plays on the outside at WR. Enter Washington, the free agent the Giants were awarded off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals this past spring.

In watching this prospect out out small Newberry College, one wonders if someone in the Arizona organization is going to lose their job over letting Washington go.

So, why did the Cardinals let him go?

“I really can’t tell you,” said Washington. “You have to ask my agent. I can’t tell you why it ended so quickly. I had a great rookie mini camp so I don’t know.”

Washington is perplexed, but not forgetful over his exit in Arizona. He will make it point that they remember him.

“Yeah, ‘you cut Corey Washington’ – I have a chip on my shoulder. I’m going to go out there every day and show them why they shouldn’t have cut me.”

Or, maybe it’s that the Giants are just bringing the best out of him. Or, it could be the Giants getting lucky again like they did with free agent players such as Victor Cruz.

“He is certainly trending up,” OC Ben McAdoo told reporters on Tuesday. “Corey is a big man that can run and go get the football. That’s a good place to start. He is a young guy who has a lot to learn but he has done some special things over the last week. It will be exciting to see him grow.”

He’s got the Giant fans’ attention, that is for sure.

Will be good to see to see a 4 set Washington, Beckham, Cruz, Randell. after the steelers game, the new rules of ref calling Interference more regularly, looks like offence will have an advantage
