2014 NFL Draft: Mockers differ greatly on Giants’ top pick

The mock draft season is about to swing into full gear soon. The Giants, with the 12th selection overall, have a plethora of holes to fill and it’s anyone’s guess who they will target in the first round.

“We need some help in a lot of areas. Everything is a priority. We’ll start the evaluation process and we’ll look at some places where we went wrong,” GM Jerry Reese said after the season. “We have a lot of things we want to fix and we will fix it.”

ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay have released their picks:  Alabama LB CJ Mosely and OT Taylor Lewin of Michigan, respectfully.

Walter Football has the Giants selecting Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan in Round One, RB Carlos Hyde of Ohio State in Round Two and Texas DE Jackson Jeffcoat in Round Three.

Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout has the Giants taking Lewin and Dane Brugler is mocking UCLA OLB Anthony Barr to Big Blue.

And Nate Davis of USA Today believes the Giants will take Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert.

Jerry Reese contends the Giants draft the best player available on their board when they are on the clock. We’ve seen that, but we’ve also seen him take players at need positions. Of course, the two can coincide at times.

Personally, it’s too early to project who will be there when the Giants’ turn to pick comes around. They will look to fill needs in free agency first. Keep in mind, the free agency period begins March 11th and the draft isn’t until the first week of May this year.

Depending on who they are able to retain/attain in free agency. I don’t see them going DT unless Linval Joseph leaves. Re-signing Joseph is supposedly a priority this offseason.  It’s hard to see them taking Mosely if they bring back Jon Beason, but Mosley will be hard to pass on.

OL, CB, RB are all needs and fans will embrace a high selection that brings a quality player at one of those positions.

Do folks realize the Giants haven't drafted a 1st round LB since the mid-80's . . . they'll most likely retain Beason and use the pick on the OL.  They will draft a RB but I seriously doubt it will before round 3.  Two of the first 3 picks will be OL and I could see the Giants go TE or WR (maybe CB) with the other selection just depending on what's available in each round.

Justin Gilbert, Taylor Lewan and Mosley would all be great picks, even for the right price moving down and picking up a pick or two and grabbing a guy like Darqueze Dennard, Zach Martin or even a safety like Ha Ha Clinton Dix or Calvin Pryor would be great also, the more picks we can get in the top 100 the better, this draft seems pretty deep at linebacker, corner and offensive line which is a dream scenario for the Giants

John,

Agreed, a lot will depend on the Giants decision in the draft after free agency and the NFL combine.

SF 49ers had all 3 linebackers go to the Pro Bowl......If Paysinger, Williams Herzlich and Rivers can't stop the run and they re-sign Beason, they have to go for Alabama Mosely to solidify that position. There are 100 -320 pounders and good athletes to pick from that can learn technique in camp for the off line. You can draft off lineman from films by their athleticism, intelligence and attitude that they bring to the table. Sign Finley if the Packers can't and take a good look at Starks as a FA.

......Never to early to....... MOCK IT-UP !!!

Beside, we pick 12th !!!

only a 11 players !!! will be Gone....

and 2-4 will be QB's !!!

1 will be DE Clowney...

1 will be LOT Jake Mathews...

1 will be WR Sammy Watkins...

........ so that should  give You a CLEAR VIEW,

of what the NYG's, will have to pick from....

out of that,

the ONLY Guy the NYG's should want is, LOT Jake Mathews...

the REESE,  MUST pick, O-Line....

but, he could go BPA, QB or DT....

I'm a fan of reading the mock drafts. You're right though it's too early. Plus from free agency on its way to fluid to predict anything.

@Brian Bannon  Unfortunately, Reese isn't smart enough to trade down and pick up extra picks in the Top 100. He will stay right where he is at their original draft position (as they always do), and tell us they are drafting the Best Player Available... which will end in the Giants reaching for another player/project they could have selected in a later round.

As an aside, I would be totally on board for picking Dennard, as some have him rated higher than Gilbert. If trading down and still getting a great CB would net us extra picks, I'm all for it, but I just don't see it happening.

@jayhawkey Finley could be a risk factor due his season ending surgery. Mosely  has a very good chance of not making it to the 12th spot (a lot depends on the combine results). I believe the Giants should and most likely will look to solidify the OL through FA and perhaps draft a OL in the later rounds (between 3-6). Starks could very well be on the Giants radar (see my column on www.footballnation.com). Since OC Ben McAdoo wants to switch the Giants offense into the west coast offense. It would make sense to fill the roster with players who can perform well in that setting.

@ReneNYK1 You do realize that signing Albert, Mack and Finley could eat up roughly $30M in cap space.

@Brian Webster Walter football has always been horrible in their mock drafts. I wouldn't worry too much about their predictions.

@Skookaloop There is no way that Reese selects a QB in the 1st round. I don't care if Johnny Manziel is still on the board. As for your mock draft selections, Can't see the Giants drafting another OL in the 1st rd in 2 straight years and also putting a rookie OT at the LT position to protect their most valuable commodity in Manning. That's a lot to ask from a rookie OT. Look for the Giants to address the LT spot through FA. Also, hard to believe Andre Williams will still be on the board in the 5th rd.

@Michael Stewart @ReneNYK1  We should cut alot of that cap space and open up alot of money.Bass gone,Snee gone,Tuck Gone,Webster gone that's close to 30 million right there,Nicks gone,Myers gone

@Michael Stewart @Skookaloop  If Johnny was available I would draft him,I love to watch him play.He would push Eli and if we could move Eli think of all the picks we would get.

@ReneNYK1 So...you're saying the team can get rid of like 8 or 9 players to make a ton of cap room, then use every penny of the cap room to sign 3 guys? Yeah, not a very solid plan at all, no chance Albert and Mack get even close to being a Giant
