Our colleagues over at Walter Football released their latest mock and, needless to say, I like it. They have Florida State CB Xavier Rhodes falling to the Giants at 19:
Rhodes could be that player. Rhodes has been discussed as an option at No. 12 for the Dolphins, but he’s just not good enough to go in that range. Picking him at No. 19 provides way more value, however.
Plus, cornerback is a big need. The Giants re-signed Aaron Ross, but they could still stand to use an early pick on a cornerback after how poorly Corey Webster played last year.
Rhodes is 6’2″, 210 and runs a 4.44 40 yard dash. He is coming out a year early and has nothing but upside. The Giants need a player like Rhodes and he will either be the best player on the board – or close to it – at 19 when the Giants select. They will have to change their scheme, however, to capitalize on Rhodes’ strengths.
From NFL.com: Rhodes thrives in physical press coverage, something very few college players can put on their resume. At time his tackling technique is questionable, but Rhodes will make his living locking up boundary receivers with a balanced and strong jam followed up by enough speed to stick in their hip pocket. Just don’t ask him to play in zone, because Rhodes shows tight movements when forced to pass receivers to a separate area. His game is somewhat scheme dependent, but expect Rhodes to be selected in the first 50 picks.
