Free agent FB Vonta Leach is still on the market. The Miami Dolphins, who have been the front-runner to secure Leach’s services, have decided to wait until camp before making a decision whether to bring the 32 year old into the fold.
The Miami Herald’s Armando Salgeuro posted the below on his Twitter feed yesterday:
Source tells me #Dolphins standing pat, going to camp without signing FB Vonta Leach. No offer. Team will weigh options on roster…Dolphins will see how talent on roster performs first. If problematic, club will circle back around to Leach, if he’s still available…
As for Vonta Leach other options … Baltimore Ravens return remains strongest option. Houston Texans in the background….Dolphins are at the 90-player roster limit. That seems to be the crew that will open camp Sunday unless unexpected happens next 3 days….My thoughts? Leach is experienced, would bring leadership to young offense, hasn’t been injured, an upgrade. Team has cap space.
Backing away from Leach is Miami’s choice. He wanted to play for the Dolphins. Wasn’t using them for leverage. Was ready to sign.
No mention of the Giants. At this point, we’re not even sure the Giants are actively pursuing Leach. The news on Henry Hynoski is positive and the Giants just may be watching this from afar as a precautionary measure.
There’s a possibility now that GM Jerry Reese sees this as an opening and steps into the fray. Most likely, the Giants will wait for Leach’s agent to contact them. That would be a sure sign that Leach is not willing to wait for the Dolphins and that he is not particularly interested in returning to either of his former teams.
