Tuesday Afternoon Report: Giants Shuffle O-Line

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Some news items ICYMI….Injuries have forced the Giants to make changes on the offensive line – at least for this week. Kevin Boothe will play center in place of David Baas (knee); David Diehl will slide over from RT to Boothe’s spot at LG and rookie Justin Pugh will start at RT.

“It’s the best way for us to play right now,” said Tom Coughlin. “We, fortunately, have some guys that can play in a lot of different spots and David Diehl has played in a lot of spots in the course of his career and he’ll go inside there and do a fine job. We’re trying to get a group on the field now that can work together, hopefully to prepare for the regular season.”

Diehl, incidentally, had cast on his right hand today. He apparently injured his thumb in last week’s loss to the Colts. It isn’t seveer enough to keep him out of the lineup, however.

“I think Diehl won’t even know he’s got a hand injury when it’s time to play,” Coughlin quipped. “He’ll just play, that’s just the way he is. I think this is a nuisance thing more than anything else and he’s trying to get to where he’s comfortable jamming that thing all the time. Once that gets taken care of, then I think he won’t even pay any attention to it.”

Coughlin said he has a lot of confidence in Pugh, which allows the Giants to shuffle their linemen around:

“Obviously we have a lot of confidence in him or he wouldn’t be here, or his pick. Certainly he’s got plenty to work on, he’s a young kid, but hopefully you put him in there now and we bring Chris Snee along, and Chris is there to help him; it’s a good move. The more they can work together, the better off we’ll be.”

WR Victor Cruz was wearing a boot on his injured heel. He said he felt he would be ready for opening day, or even sooner. Coughlin outlined Cruz’ status…

“Hopefully it’s not going to be a long time, but who knows? I don’t know that, but he feels better from one day to the next, which is a good thing. Now if you look at him, you say, ‘Oh my God, he’s got crutches, and boot’ so they’re doing all kinds of stuff to make sure that he doesn’t put any pressure on it, but he did feel a bit better today.”

In addition to Cruz and Baas, WR Louis Murphy (leg), WR Ramses Barden (knee) did not practice today, nor did DE Damontre Moore (shoulder), CB Corey Webster (hamstring) and S Antrel Rolle (ankle).

DE Justin Tuck (hamstring), WR Jerrel Jernigan (soreness) and rookie S Cooper Taylor (hamstring) all returned to practice.

In roster news, WR Keith Carlos and OL Chris DeGeare were waived. The first roster cuts down to 75 players is next Tuesday, so it’s doubtful the team will be filling those spots.
