The Giants must cut their roster down to the mandatory 53 players by 6pm tonight. Injuries will dictate how the roster is shaped and it’s unfortunate the Giants will be saying goodbye to some fine young men.
Tom Coughlin will spend his 67th birthday having those tough conversations with around 20 players today to discuss their future in blue. Some will return as replacements for injured and suspended players. Others will be back on the practice squad.
Some things we know already. DT Markus Kuhn will likely remain on PUP. S Will Hill will make the club and then go on reserve/suspension. The Giants are likely to use their IR designated to return card on RB Andre Brown (leg), but he has to make the 53-man roster first and then can’t officially be placed on IR on until Tuesday.
When the smoke clears, the Giants will begin their preparation for the season opener on Monday. Coughlin was asked who might be in – or out – of practice on Monday.
“You know you’d love to stand up on a band box and say, ‘Alright, anybody who makes this team has got to practice. We need to practice.’ But you know what? It just sometimes doesn’t work that way. Then you’re scrambling. It’s very difficult to put together the kind of week that you need to have when you are at 53 and eight and out of the 53, there’s three or four of them that can’t practice. That becomes rather difficult.”
Many of the injured will return on Monday, but some won’t hit the field until Wednesday. Coughlin said he was fine with that…
“If we can get Wednesday, Thursday, Friday in a solid week of normal preparation, I think we’ll be okay.”
