Thursday Morning Update: Countdown Clock expires on Giants

The quick and dirty this morning….

The Super Bowl Countdown clock/calendar, installed in the locker room by GM Jerry Reese before the season, has been removed. With the Giants officially out of the playoffs, the clock is no longer relevant. Tom Coughlin said he had no knowledge of it’s whereabouts nor who was responsible for it’s removal.

“I didn’t put it up, so I’m not taking it down,” the coach quipped.

Coughlin also made his stand on whether or not he was going to increase reps for the younger players the next three weeks. The Giants are playing two first-place teams the next to games (Seattle and Detroit) and he wants to win by playing his best players:

“I’m just saying those people who are playing have earned their right to play.”

QB Eli Manning was asked if he is surprised the Giants have been eliminated from the playoffs so early this season:

“Obviously I’m surprised.  I thought we were prepared to have a big year and do some good things.  It was just tough.  We had some opportunities to win some games that we didn’t, that were very close and definitely within reach in the fourth quarter and we didn’t take advantage of those opportunities.  Therefore, we’re in the position that we’re in right now. “

Yesterday’s scratches from practice: DT Cullen Jenkins (shin, quadricep), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (shoulder), S Cooper Taylor (hamstring), CB Terrell Thomas (knee). CB Corey Webster (ankle) was limited but his return this season is doubtful at this time.

RB Brandon Jacobs, who was placed on IR on Tuesday, has undergone surgery according to Ebenezer Samuel of the Daily News.

GEICO SportsNite has reaction from the Giants as they prepare to take on the Seattle Seahwaks on Sunday.

A word to Jerry Reese: Jerry, if you're trying to motivate a team by putting up a countdown clock to the Super Bowl, make sure you assemble a roster of players with the talent to get there. Your drafts have been less than stellar the past two years and it is showing on the field. Do your homework, make better decisions and get this organization back on track. This is the NY Giants, we have standards...
