Three Things: Giants vs Colts

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Some things I will be watching in tonight’s game vs the Colts:

Run defense….Last week in Pittsburgh it looked like the same old Giants vs the run. The Steelers racked up 81 yards on 17 carries in the first half (an average of 4.8 YPC) and drove the ball quite easily in between the 20’s on the Giants. Tonight, the Colts will try to establish the run to limit exposing QB Andrew Luck to the Giants’ pass rush. They are not known for their ability to rush the football, but RB Vick Ballard did average 6.0 YPC last week vs the Bills. The Giants need to maintain gap control and do some stuffing like we were promised when the Giants began collecting DTs earlier this year.

Run offense….RB Andre Brown is a positive-yardage back. He averaged 5.8 YPC on four attempts last week, but he’s splitting time with David Wilson, who is a home-run hitter, but has issues finding holes most plays. He has to show he can overcome that and hit the line quicker. Da’Rel Scott needed to show some progress or risk losing his spot to rookie Michael Cox, if he hasn’t done so already. He won’t play tonight, providing Cox with a golden opportunity.

Tight ends…..Larry Donnell (sprained knee) is not going to play, so Adrien Robinson may get a longer look than expected. He is going to have to make some noise tonight so we don’t forget he’s here. Last week, he was targeted only once – a four yard reception. Brandon Myers and Eli Manning are starting to click, and tonight we may see a preview of what their relationship could blossom into. Myers is money in the bank when it comes to catching the football and Eli is beginning to trust that talent. It will be interesting to see where this goes and how far…

Look ahead boy-os,  we've got a tough road after NJ and Columbus: Rags, Pens, Habs, Flyers, Rags, Bruins, and Wings.  Any game Johnson plays could be a problem and he's gonna have have to play a couple.  If things go rotten we could go 3-6, or we could play like tiger cats and go 6-3.  Let's see who rises to the occasion.

I think the Islanders are going to have to treat some of these games like playoff games even though its early in the season. We have 53 points with 40 games played but Florida sitting in the 9th spot in the conference has 45 points and 2 games in hand on the Islanders. Those two loses to Buffalo and Edmonton were very bad. We need the game tonight and tomorrows game against Columbus before we look ahead to the Rangers on Tuesday. I'll be at the game tonight.

isles are 7-4 in their past 11 games. they arent on an 8 game losing streak. their issues are being magnified by teams below us getting scorching hot.

we have two huge games this month against the rangers, and another against the penguins.  all the isles have to do is worry about themselves. all teams go through ups and downs. the rangers arent going to play this good the rest of the year and the isles are going to play this bad the rest of the year.  things arent as bad as everyone likes to make it seem.

The rags are now the hottest team in the league, and right behind them are the Caps, we need to step up our game big time!  We better be feeling confident

Since the Islanders got off to a 18-6 start they been basically playing 500 hockey at 8-7-1. We need to heat up again or several teams will be passing us by.

OK, I'm officially spooked! ....Watching the Rags/kings and I cannot believe it! When the hell did the Rags get so fast and smart? I thought this was OUR year, but the Rags are playing outstanding and it sucks! The thing that I noticed is that they make quick smart passes and shoot every chance they get. When we were hot, that's exactly what we were doing, but now..we hang on to the puck and then loose control. We are way to fancy, make low percentage plays, and then...miss the net! This trend has been going on for about a month now, and although we have had a winning record, it was due to the talent on this team and not the effort/ coaching, or style of play. I will be sick to my stomach if the Rags beat us this year, and it is looking like it's just a matter of time. We seriously need to beat the hell out of the Devils tomorrow. IMO, our next game will go a long way in determining our fate! PLEASE...play like we know you can!

@mrcisback The next month will be a test to our maturity. Our vets have to show up and lead the way. As much as we progressed this year, I am afraid it is not enough. Our competition is not sitting idle and watching us with admiration.

@erika The rags is a more mature team that is peaking at the right time. I still hope they'll fall on their face...

@shlo @erika I hope you are right, shlo. What is disturbing is that they put their back-up in against the champs...were down 2 goals early...and still made the win look easy. UGH!  Down 2-1, their coach called a time out. How novel! Our coach call one when it's way too late!

@erika @shlo Nothing to worry about...Islanders did the SAME exact thing in the beginining of November! Yes the rangers are hot, however, that is not the thing to be concerned with, is the fact that they are winning with their back up also!  if we lose tonight i would come back with Halak tomorrow! if we win the play Johnson and give him some uppers, because he looks like he is falling a sleep in the net!
