This Urlacher talk just won’t go away….
The odds and prospects of where former Bears’ LB Brian Urlacher will play this season are being bandied about by other sites around the net. We’ve told you the Giants currently have no interest in bringing him under any circumstances. That was last week. Things haven’t changed since then, but the talk is still hot….
Urlacher has not garnered much interest at all in the open market. Some teams were rumored (Cowboys, Vikings and Cardinals) to have interest in the soon-to-be 35 year-old perennial Pro Bowler, but not at his price, which is said to be in the $2.5-3 million range for multiple seasons. He turned down a one-year, $2 mil offer from the Bears, calling it “an ultimatum, not a negotiation.” He should have taken it.
If Urlacher wants to play this season, he’s going to have to face the fiscal reality of the 2013 NFL free agent marketplace and take a one-year deal at close to the veteran minimum. He might get some bonus money or an incentive clause along with it, but that is what he is looking at.
The Giants just signed Dan Connor, 27, to a one-year deal at the minimum of $725k. Urlacher, a 10-year vet, would have to be paid $940k. IMHO, that’s more than the Giants are willing to spend. Remember, he’s no longer a factor against the pass and in this day and age, that’s the death knell for a MLB.
Yet, the chatter continues. Maybe it’s because Bovada.lv, the online sportsbook, has the Giants listed as the second favorite to land Urlacher….
Baltimore Ravens: 23/10
New York Giants: 5/2
Cincinnati Bengals: 7/2
Denver Broncos: 4/1
Minnesota Vikings: 6/1
Atlanta Falcons: 6/1
Oakland Raiders: 8/1
