Run-stopping Giants’ D wary of Chargers’ Woodhead

Do the Giants stop the run these days or what? Rex Ryan would love this defense because that is the most important thing in the world to him. But pleasing him is not a goal of Tom Coughlin. Winning football games is.

Over the past nine games, the Giants have been stingy against the run: 53.4 yards per game, 3.3 yards per carry and only three TDs. And they’ve done it against some of the top RBs in the league…

Week 4 – Jamaal Charles, Kansas City: 65 yards (3.6 avg) 0 TD
Week 5 – LeSean McCoy, Eagles: 46 yards (2.3 avg) 1 TD
Week 6 – Matt Forte, Chicago: 67 yards (3.5 avg) 0 TD
Week 7 – Adrian Peterson, Vikings: 28 yards (2.2 avg) 0 TD
Week 8 – LeSean McCoy, Eagles: 48 yards (3.2 avg) 0 TD
Week 10 – Rashad Jennings, Oakland: 88 yards (4.4 avg) 0 TD
Week 11 – Eddie Lacy, Green Bay: 27 yards (1.9 avg) 1 TD
Week 12 – DeMarco Murray, Dallas: 86 yards (6.1 avg) 0 TD
Week 13 – Alfred Morris, Redskins: 26 yards (2.4 avg) 1 TD

This week, the Giants face the Chargers’ 21st ranked rushing attack. Their feature back is Ryan Matthews, who is 11th in the league in rushing with 782 yards and is sporting a 4.4 YPC average. It looks as of the Giants’ streak of stopping top runners may continue…

In fact, Tom Coughlin did not even mention Matthews in his Wednesday rundown of the Chargers’ offense.

Danny Woodhead, however, who leads all NFL RBs in receptions with 61, did attract his attention. Coughlin had this to say about Woodhead…

“He’s made an outstanding contribution. Woodhead, you can see that Phillip Rivers has relied on him. All you have to do is watch, maybe you didn’t watch the last drive against Kansas City, he goes to Woodhead twice. Woodhead makes a play with the clock bearing down on him where he fakes like he’s going to run out of bounds, ducks back inside and picks up probably another 11 yards before he runs out of bounds. He had two of those big plays at that point in time. He’s become a very reliable guy. Rivers knows where he is all the time and goes to him. His run after the catch stuff is still extremely good and he still runs the ball as a third down runner and primarily he’s jumped back there and has their longest kickoff return as well.”

TYSON CHANDLER: THERE IS A LOT WRONG WITH THE KNICKS !!!!!

“A lot around here is made of personnel,’’ Chandler said after his exit meeting with Jackson on Thursday. “I don’t think that’s it. I personally think you have to bring a winning culture out here. Until that’s established, you can rotate players as much you want, it’s not going to make a difference.’’

“We had a great season last year. Then again one team wins a championship, the rest go home,’’ said Chandler. “My goal is to win another championship. I said that the moment when I came here fresh off a championship.’’

“I feel everybody needs to go back and look in the mirror,’’ Chandler said. “Whatever players are here, whatever coaches are here. I’m not in position to say who stays, who goes. But whoever is going to be here next year needs to understand what happened this year and not allow history to repeat itself.’’

“We got to alter a lot of stuff,’’ Chandler said. “Offensively and defensively, quite honestly. If you don’t, you allow history to repeat itself. I expect a lot of changes. I expect to have a culture of identity of what we want to establish night in, night out next year. That’s the only way you build, to hang your hat on. Everyone has their weak spots but you have to be great at something. I don’t think we found that this year.’’

“I don’t think you can find a better guy,’’ Chandler said. “He’s a lot more accomplished than myself or anybody else. I had the opportunity to experience [a title] once. He had the opportunity to experience it 13 times. I don’t think it gets better than that.’’

“We all seen what Pat Riley’s been able to accomplish in Miami, not being coach, being upstairs,’’ Chandler added. “If you’re a winner you’re a winner and [that] bleeds down to others. That’s the one thing I hope. ‘’

Lots of people piggybacking the "  fire woodson" venue to be cool and fit in here. I will say this ... Pop, Riley or even Phil's ancient azz could coach next year and do no better than what woodson did this year if our starting PG is Ray Felton. Another myth and truly overkill is woodson destroyed Shumpert's confidence. The fact is Shumpert is just not that good... in fact he is terrible and super overrated on defense by this Blog. Finally Tyson Chandler is even more offensively challenged than Shumpert.  This was obvious this year when this team did not hit the 3 ball like last year.

Hopefully Jackson either (a) convinces Melo that he needs to sit tight and endure a season of mediocrity while Knicks let bad contracts expire by their terms to free up money for 2015 or (b) lets Melo walks and starts from scratch.  I hope to all that is holy in the basketball heavens that the Knicks don't go "half-in" and try to get creative in order to be first-round playoff competitive in 2014.  IMO, it would be a risky, likely-to-lose move to sacrifice salary cap space by seeking out half measure moves for the upcoming season.  That's what the Knicks have been doing for more than a decade now.

Woodson will not get another job as coach of an NBA team. He is as incompetent as they come. His popularity with veteran players is understandable because he lets them do whatever they want...

I truly like woody. Everything thing from the stare downs he gives his players to the just for men goatee. It's his coaching which is bothersome. Everything else is gravy. I'm sure there will be life for woodson once the Knicks give him the pink slip

From NY Post:

Kerr "absolutely expects" Knicks coaching offer. "And if he's offered the job he's definitely going to do it" the source told the Post.

According to NYPOST, Kerr expects to not only be offered Knicks job, but excited to take it and is already working with TNT on his broadcasting playoff schedule around his commitment to be the new Knicks coach.

Phil Jackson’s first real imprint on the Knicks organization will come when he names a new head coach or stuns the basketball world by retaining Mike Woodson. Among those waiting on the news is Steve Kerr, the former player and general manager turned broadcaster for TNT.

According to a source close to the situation, Kerr “absolutely expects” to be offered the job. “And if he’s offered the job he’s definitely going to do it,” the source told The Post.

Step 1 FIRE WOODSON

Step 2 throw JR in the trash

Step 3 trade Chandler

THESE SHOULD BE THE OFFSEASON PRIORITIES. Anyone who still thinks JR Spliff should still be on this team is an absolute bonafide MORON. Its obvious that all of Amare's statements about selfish childish players, refer to JR.

Please fire Woodson, i have so many reason why i could literally fill up the page. At this point hes just being selfish. But he should not be head coach. If anything, make him an assistant under Kerr (even tho that might hurt his reputation even more) hes sitting there pleading his heart out like its personal or something. Melo is extremely talented but hes not the smartest, so you cant have a coach who lets Melo do whatever he wants because their scared they'll get fired like D'Antoni if they displease Melo.

KnickelusKnickleby
KnickelusKnickleby

My problem with Woodson is he should've fired his Coaching Staff early on even Herb Williams for some young blood who knows todays NBA

to help him adjust

he stayed loyal to his staff and now he is on his way out while Herb probably will still remain on the bench

no reason why he shouldn't of hired John Starks or Anthony Mason as an Assistant?

his stubbornness got him in this predicament

PEACE OUT WOODROW

JayfromtheFix

Im of the belief that Woodson needs to be fired this offseason, i also believe PJ hands are tied this offseason other than possibly resigning Melo and bringing in a pg like Collison.

But Phil can get radical and say i wanna win now screw the future ( i dont recommend this) he can look at the teams looking to make a shakeup under new management. As of right now Detroit is the main team that fits that criteria. With that said would anyone do the following:

TC and AB for Josh Smith, Brandon Jennings and Jerebko

I would honestly like a first round pick also to do this trade. We will be giving them  almost 100 mil in salary cap relief over 4 years, they will be getting decent NBA talent on expiring deals one a NBA defensive player of the year. I know they have Drummonds but this trade will be for the expiring and getting out from under Josh Smith contract.

For the Knicks its a quick way to possibly jump back into the playoff talk. If we looked at the games where Felton plays well the knicks are damn near unbeatable; this goes to show with a good pg the knicks will be a good team. Josh can be a beast if he has the right coach and team mates around him in the locker room that can keel him level headed and not think he is the star. As a second fiddle he is great, not so much as the star.

The bad for the knicks is we would have STAT and Cole playing C and we would have to kiss goodbye to 2015 plan and all the potential all stars in the plan.

Lineup:

PG Jennings

SG JR

SF Melo

PF Smith

C Amare

Bench:

Felton Prigs Shump THJR Cole Tyler

Woodson should not be coaching in the NBA. He's slow---literally. His brain cells have been damaged by booze and/or pot. His eyes are jaundiced which shows some kind of substance overuse.

Woodson did a terrible job. It wasn't all his fault, but he needs to go.

OLDKNICK

@moneyball  You are right I have always said all the blame simply CANNOT go to woody alone. The players you mentioned and other have seriously under-achieved this season. Sure I dont like a lot of things woody has done and he needs to be replaced, mainly because the players were not listening to him. Woody isnt the worst, but I want a better coach. Woody is the kind of coach that needs mature responisible players that will go out and execute exactly what he describes in practice. He is NOT the kind of coach that wants to make major changes in the game. He expects the player to do what needs to be done. He sadly did NOT have those types of players this season.

knicksgirl35
knicksgirl35

@jsnooka  It may be shallow but I want a handsome coach. Someone who can actually coach and represents NY in the hot male kinda way. There's NOTHING handsome about Woody. If he could coach I really wouldn't care how he looked but he has a double whammy. LOL

How could you like him?

glider1965

@darealeric  Unless steps 2 and 3 have something to do with getting a competent player to replace Felton, then I would amend your to do list to insert a new step 1(a) -- get rid of Felton at all costs.  For me he is the root of most of the Knicks issues this season.  Other than an occasional pick and roll, he sets up no one.  And most Knick defensive breakdowns start with Felton as he unable to stay with is man or get through a pick.  Be gone Ray Ray, be gone.

jsnooka

I agree with everything but would like to correct step 2. Throw start of the season JR in the trash also add garbagani to the list

Interesting out of the box plan. You'd need a players coach like Woodson to get the most out of josh smith. Woody had josh smith in ATL..

glider1965

@kingkiyan  True.  But at least he has heart and dedication.  He worked his a@@ off to over come three bad injuries in his career -- two with the Knicks.  Hard to hate players with heart.  Hard to like players without it -- looking at you Felton and Chandler (2013-14 version).

JayfromtheFix
JayfromtheFix

@BiggieTKB  I understand where you are coming from with the Woody like coach to get the most out of Smith ( both) but I'm done with Woody. Too much miscues this season and some last season. I want a coach thats high profile enough where the players respect him and has a good offensive AND defensive system not iso ball or raining three ball. I want a coach that will tweak his system to fit his players strength.

@BiggieTKB  Yeah. A little weed for some (not me I don't choose to indulge). Not so much that it turns your eyes an ugly yellow hue.

@knicksgirl35 @OLDKNICK@moneyball Bringing in Bargs doomed this franchise worse than the Eddy Curry deal. The Front office was stupid, not Woody.

In the immortal words of another dumb person, "You don't goto war with the army you want, you go to war with the army you have" or something like. Woody had a system that worked last year, unfortunately they lost personnel, got bad personnel, and players so-called under-achieved or did they? The Knicks set the world on fire from 3pt land last year. Even Barkley said that level was unsustained and guess what they didn't sustain it.

There is a great coach out there right now, who won 50+ games one year and was in the lottery the next, got the #1 pick too and has never looked back. Too bad the Knicks can't do that, we gave our pick away for FREAKING BARGS!!!

You want to blame someone other than the players, blame them!
