Run-stopping Giants’ D wary of Chargers’ Woodhead

Do the Giants stop the run these days or what? Rex Ryan would love this defense because that is the most important thing in the world to him. But pleasing him is not a goal of Tom Coughlin. Winning football games is.

Over the past nine games, the Giants have been stingy against the run: 53.4 yards per game, 3.3 yards per carry and only three TDs. And they’ve done it against some of the top RBs in the league…

Week 4 – Jamaal Charles, Kansas City: 65 yards (3.6 avg) 0 TD
Week 5 – LeSean McCoy, Eagles: 46 yards (2.3 avg) 1 TD
Week 6 – Matt Forte, Chicago: 67 yards (3.5 avg) 0 TD
Week 7 – Adrian Peterson, Vikings: 28 yards (2.2 avg) 0 TD
Week 8 – LeSean McCoy, Eagles: 48 yards (3.2 avg) 0 TD
Week 10 – Rashad Jennings, Oakland: 88 yards (4.4 avg) 0 TD
Week 11 – Eddie Lacy, Green Bay: 27 yards (1.9 avg) 1 TD
Week 12 – DeMarco Murray, Dallas: 86 yards (6.1 avg) 0 TD
Week 13 – Alfred Morris, Redskins: 26 yards (2.4 avg) 1 TD

This week, the Giants face the Chargers’ 21st ranked rushing attack. Their feature back is Ryan Matthews, who is 11th in the league in rushing with 782 yards and is sporting a 4.4 YPC average. It looks as of the Giants’ streak of stopping top runners may continue…

In fact, Tom Coughlin did not even mention Matthews in his Wednesday rundown of the Chargers’ offense.

Danny Woodhead, however, who leads all NFL RBs in receptions with 61, did attract his attention. Coughlin had this to say about Woodhead…

“He’s made an outstanding contribution. Woodhead, you can see that Phillip Rivers has relied on him. All you have to do is watch, maybe you didn’t watch the last drive against Kansas City, he goes to Woodhead twice. Woodhead makes a play with the clock bearing down on him where he fakes like he’s going to run out of bounds, ducks back inside and picks up probably another 11 yards before he runs out of bounds. He had two of those big plays at that point in time. He’s become a very reliable guy. Rivers knows where he is all the time and goes to him. His run after the catch stuff is still extremely good and he still runs the ball as a third down runner and primarily he’s jumped back there and has their longest kickoff return as well.”

CARMELO ANTHONY ON WOODY. THE FULL QUOTE

“To be honest with you, Mike Woodson and me have become, he’s been a guy that I can talk to, almost a father figure, a friend, a guy that I can bounce stuff off,” an emotional Anthony said on Thursday. “I’ve been a guy he’s talked to multiple times, about multiple things in different situations. So when that time comes, if it’s ready for me to step up and take that next step and say, ‘OK, Mike Woodson needs to stay or go . . .’ I don’t think it would come down to that, but I would back him.

“If he needs my recommendation whether it’s here or anywhere else, I’ll back him. I have nothing bad to say about Mike Woodson. I support him. For me as a player, I had some of my best years under Mike Woodson. So I would never have anything bad to say about Mike Woodson.”

Sounds like tomorrow is the day according to Isola's article.

I am way way past blaming Woodson. He should have been fired months ago.

I think a lot of the players are to blame for this terrible season. Dolan told them no change was coming, and they still played like garbage. So many awful losses this season. It sucks that we have our legit star player and can't even play in this postseason.

Just want to assert that NO team has fired their coach yet, so its not as if Woodson is being hung out to dry. I suspect he, and others will begin to be handed their pink slips tomorrow.

Fire the man so he can go get another job somewhere in nba or NCAA.

None of his assistants had contracts past this season, the organization knew he was not coming back.

Do the right thing n fire him already.....

Several things have surfaced from Knicks land.

1.  Tyson stated that Knicks need to establish a winning culture and there was disconnect between players and coaches-

What has to be different [next season]? I think we all have to be on the same page. I think that’s the biggest key. A winning culture. Got to establish a winning culture, if not, you allow history to repeat itself,” Chandler said after exit interviews on Thursday

2. Amare indicates that there was a lack of professionalism that existed this year:

"Asked if the Knicks could bring back Woodson if the players were not on the same page with the coach, Stoudemire delivered an indictment of his teammates.

"You got to have pros. Pros are the guys who actually focus in on becoming a better basketball player," Stoudemire said. "Who are constant about their health, constant about training, and improving and studying the game of basketball.
"

Sounds to me JR Smith is being indicted and his pappy Woodson.

I was and am one of shumperta biggest fans... Loved him in the draft and always respected his skills. What has disturbed me is he is seemingly more concerned with the Shumpert brand and his outside interests than improving his basketball skills.

This year he was clearly affected by the Trade rumors. Also his off season surprise surgery left him behind the eight ball in working out during the summer and arguably the first half of the season,

He's developed sporadically over his career in NY.. But he's gotten a ton of PT at multiple positions. This year his fundamentals dipped. Then picked up towards the end of the season. I can't tell if that was the injury to his knee or something in his head...

Dolan and co definitely said something to him about his public persona. Evidenced by him cutting his signature flat top at the start if the year.

His outside shot was either horrible or just OK. But that was always the rap on him.

Tough to blame shumperts issues on the coach who gave him every opportunity to affect games. How many #17 picks get his level of burn? Injuries and all.

Woodsons decisions makes you want to punch him in his face.

I like Woodson I like how he first challenged melo to get in better shape and player better defense and got jr to listen. He needs to learn to be a coach on the fly and know that switching all the time is the main reason we lose. I get Felton is the pg we have (all thought the worst in the league) but you can't over play him. The less min he plays the more effective he is IMO

What's the rush? If he wasn't at the exit interviews that tells you all you need to know.

I get a real kick out of all the fans who have turned woody into a cross between Frankenstein, the hunch back of Notre Dane and a midevil witch...

The guy has a 580 winning percentage in ny.. He didn't grow stupid over night..

Your main complain was a lack of offensive creativity...bringing in a triangle coordinator solves that..

The players love him and desire amares twisted quotes.. They played for him all year.. Felton and chandler -the bad eggs -- sat out fame 82 for a reason..

See the forest through the trees.is life with Kurt rambis as HC better really

The devil you know is always better than the devil you don't know. Melo is saying that right now.

Biggie.

Woodson has this effect with players though. I've always said Woodson should be a Player development coach bc he knows how to bond with players, However he should stay away from head coaching until he learns not to be so stubborn adapt & adjust. Become more creative and open to new ideas to be better. He is stuck too much in his playing days and time has moved on. I do not want to see him back and Melo liking him won't be enough to keep him.

@jax13 I feel Tyson will get traded...probably for a PG and a big to replace him .  One of those 2 players might come via a draft pick (meaning, the Knicks will get 1 of those needs and a draft pick, which will be used for the other need).

Who's on the chopping block? I know Dumars is getting canned as GM but which coaches who missed the playoffs are in danger of losing their jobs?

Most were already fired or first year coaches.. I think the only one in jeopardy is d'antoni without looking too closely.

@mel brown amare could well be calling out Chandler

Anti_u
Anti_u

Fair..but he was coming off a pretty good playoff performance and Woodson decides to publicly announce that his starting job was up for grabs. Why? JR had won 6th man of the year, what's the purpose of messing with something that's proven to work. Not to mention he threw Shump under the bus after the Pacers game, but had nothing to say when JR took that dumb shot vs. the Rockets. Woody was playing favorites and it obviously affected Shump's psyche.

Woodson killed his confidence man. That was the beginning of the end.

Seth Plaut

@BiggieTKB  I think the fact Woodson attempted to turn him into a PG, more so than just being a guard/SF completely screwed his development, and for that I blame Woodson.

chudogz

@BiggieTKB. a 580 winning percentage is nothing special. In fact, with our payroll, it's flat out unacceptable. Your basically saying we should accept mediocrity. No thanks.... #FIREBALDY......... Ps. How did Murry look last game? Like I said all year, he could have done what FattyGunz did this season on offense, and better than Fatty Gunz did this season on defense...

@BiggieTKB  Woodson's flaws have been tremendously exposed this season. As any sport, it's a team effort, but the coach takes the sh!t or the plaudits.

- How many games did this team lose because Woodson did not know how to manage late game situation?

- How can a team be successful when it takes the coach 50+ games to find appropriate rotations and lineups?

- How can a team be successful if the coach doesn't adjust to his new personnel?

- How can players improve if the coach has preference over players who aren't deserving of so many minutes?

The list goes on. Obviously it's not all on Woodson, many players are to blame. But you start at the top, always.

NoVaCaInE
NoVaCaInE

@BiggieTKB  He also...

1. Destroyed Shump's confidence this year.

2. Had questionable sub patterns.

3. Played Felton and Melo way too many mins.

4. Refused to play Metta and Cole Aldrich. Cole could have been solid at 10-15 mins per and Metta at 20 mins per. Would have liked to see a Metta/Shump combo defensively.

5. Did not hold players accountable when they played poorly.

I don't put all of the blame on Woodson. Melo, Amar'e and Tyson should have done a better job both on the floor and locker room. JR should have been more professional and Shump's decline hurt a great deal. His offense was predictable, easy to defend and painful to watch. The Knicks were one of the worse defensive teams in the league. The constant switching made the Knicks easy to score on off the P&R. Yet, Woodson refused to change his approach. Teams beat us the same way every night. Even teams that were in the lower echelon in scoring. The Knicks were always out of position, the constant switching caused issues with rebounding. The Knicks did not play fundamentally sound basketball.

It's time for Woody to go.

@BiggieTKB  I agree that this season isn't all on Woody but this team has to many big personalities for Woodson to handle

@BiggieTKB  D'antoni, Corbin (Jazz) , Pistons interim coach, Adelman (wolves), Williams (NO)..I know they are all in deep crap.

BiggieTKB
BiggieTKB

I have nothing against players competing for starting roles. In fact I openly criticized Woodson for handing Felton a starting job in the same sentence as chandler and melo..

We can quibble about rotations, substitutions, who was a favorite and who was thrown under the bus,,,

Mistakes were made.. By everyone. Is easiest to blame the coach which is fine. Most fans and media do that instinctively,

I just don't think Woodson got 17 games dumber in one year, the truth lies, somewhere in the middle,

He got the year and didn't get the job done. He admitted as much. Let the chips fall where they may. I'm over it,

BiggieTKB
BiggieTKB

@chudogz .. 580 only puts him third in franchise history,

BiggieTKB
BiggieTKB

They had an interim coach... Same deal. No contract. No decision necessary... They'll start their coaching search once they settle the GM situation with Dumars which is very much in flux.

D'antoni is owned 4 mil next yr. -- he can be fired.. Jus Ike woody. FYI the lakers press has pity on him for the impossible situation he was dealt... Another fan base media turning to injuries as an excuse ... Imagine that.

Seth Plaut

@BiggieTKB  Fire/Announce not returning are the same thing. I also stated Pistons coach....

@BiggieTKB  Does not matter, even if a contract runs out, a team usually states we have decided not to bring them back.

He doesn't have a deal to extend. You can't fire someone who isn't under contract...

You're down to d'antoni...

Seth Plaut

@BiggieTKB  Still have to announce if his deal will be extended (which it won't). My point is, people who could have been fired or let go, have not today.

@seth plaut Corbin in Utah doesn't have a contract for next year BTW.. He coached this year on the last year of his deal.

So he's in effect out of a job,

@BiggieTKB  That is just Williams, and for the record, I don't think he is fired either, I am just stating he is a possible candidate. I made my predictions above.

BiggieTKB

@seth plaut

dell Demps quotes today on the NoLa coach... Imagine using injuries as an excuse

---------------

'I think he was put in an impossible situation with the injuries that we had,'' Demps said.

''With the pieces that he's had this year and the way our players developed, I think that's a definite positive.

''I think the development of Anthony and the way Tyreke came on at the end of the year, I think we've had a number of players improve. Now obviously, we want to get all those improvements on the court at the same time. I thought the way our guys competed, I am happy with that.''

Seth Plaut
Seth Plaut

@BiggieTKB  If I had to guess, Corbin, Pistons interim, D'antoni, and Woodson are goners, and that is not factoring playoff coaches.

Seth Plaut
Seth Plaut

@BiggieTKB  I am simply stating the names mentioned by bloggers, and insiders, a lot of them are expected to be fired Biggie.

BiggieTKB
BiggieTKB

Williams maybe but he won more games three years in a row and had nothing to work with..the GM is probably in trouble for signing Evans.. He's developing Anthony Davis so have low expectations.

Utah had zero expectations. Pistons already fired mo cheeks and in ninny adelman was brought in by flip saunders for stability so he ain't going anywhere again he showed improvement in wins..they need all the stability to try and keep Klove

It may be a slow year for coach turnover
