Giants Facts, Figures and Conjecture for Dec 3

What a year this has been for the Giants and their fans. During the Tom Coughlin era, it has been tradition to start fast and then fade. This season has been just the opposite. The Giants lost their first six and won five of the next six.

In addition, the strengths of the team – the vertical passing game and the pass rush – are now weaknesses. The Giants are living and dying with their running game and newly-energized defense.

They are averaging 19.2 points per game this season on offense as compared to 26.8 per game in 2012 This season. On defense, they are surrendering 23.9 points per game as opposed to 21.5 in 2012, but keep in mind 11 TDs were not their direct responsibility.

More from the Giants….

*Thirty-four seconds into the fourth quarter, running back Andre Brown gave the Giants a 21-17 lead on a one-yard run. The Giants remained in front for the remainder of the game, giving the team its fifth victory in six games. Manning, meanwhile, was credited with a game-winning drive, which Elias defines as a victory in which a quarterback rallies his team from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie.

It was Manning’s first such victory since Oct. 28, 2012 in Dallas and the 24th of his career. That places him fifth among active quarterbacks, behind Peyton Manning (50), Tom Brady (34), Drew Brees (31) and Ben Roethlisberger (28).

*With four games remaining, Manning has been sacked a career-high 31 times this season. His previous high was 30 sacks in 2009. Last year, Manning was sacked just 19 times.

In his 10-year career, Manning has been sacked 224 times for losses totaling 1,726 yards. Among active quarterbacks, Manning is sixth in times sacked and seventh in sack yardage. The home/away breakdown is almost perfectly symmetrical. In 74 starts at home, Manning has been sacked 120 times for 863 yards. In 73 starts on the road, Manning has been sacked 124 times for 863 yards.

Manning has thrown for far fewer touchdowns against Washington than the other two divisional teams, and the Redskins are the only one of the three against whom he has more interceptions than touchdowns. But his won-loss record against Washington is his best vs. division foes.

*The Giants have committed an NFL-high 31 turnovers (19 interceptions, 12 lost fumbles). Their opponents have scored 102 points off those giveaways. The team that has given up the most points off of turnovers at 117 is, surprisingly, Denver, which has an AFC-best 10-2 record. The Broncos have 25 giveaways, tied with Detroit for the league’s third-highest total after the Giants and Jets (27).

*The Giants have had at least one giveaway in each of their 12 games. The last season in which they committed a turnover in every game was 2007.

*According to Elias, the Giants have started 45 different players this season. The most ever used by the Giants is 49 in 1980 (not counting 1987, when each team played three games with strike-replacement players). The NFL record of 50 starters is shared by three teams: Buffalo and Philadelphia in 2010 and Jacksonville in 2012.

*Hakeem Nicks’ two catches in Washington left him with 299 for his career. He needs one catch to become the 10th player to catch 300 passes in a Giants uniform. Kyle Rote finished his Giants career with exactly 300 receptions.

*Nicks’ 34 receiving yards on Sunday increased his career total to 4,380. That moved him past Bob Tucker (4,376) and into ninth place on the Giants’ career list.

*Victor Cruz’s team-high six catches in Washington increased his career total to 234. That vaulted him over David Meggett (231) and Lionel Manuel (232) and into 17th place on the franchise’s all-time list.

*Guard David Diehl played in his 161st regular-season game in a Giants uniform on Sunday. That ties him with Charlie Conerly and Dave Jennings for 14th on the Giants’ games-played list. Hall of Famer Rosie Brown is 13th with 162.

*The victory in Washington evened Tom Coughlin’s career regular-season road record at 71-71.

*The Giants are 4-0 this season when they are leading or tied at halftime and 1-7 when they trail after two quarters.

I can give  4 reasons Melo need to play..

Melo and Dolan are a match made in heaven. The immediate second Melo realized he was failing the team in a crucial game, he decided to blame that pesky old shoulder again from a few seasons ago. And, in that immediate moment, Dolan was hoping Melo would do that too.

he's the reason we lost against the wizards.if your shoulder hurt and you cant make shots pass the ball, play make, be a decoy.especially when other knicks like JR and Amare are hot throughout the game. People act like melo ony job is scoring.if he wanna win play defense and shut down the oppsoing best player

Woody needs to be fired the immediate second a final buzzer sounds eliminating the Knicks, whether it occurs in a Knicks loss or Hawks win.

I love Melo, but the Knicks would be stupid to give him a max contract to stay here. We all know the roster is flawed, as well as the coaching, but any other "superstar" gets this team at least in the playoffs.

When is Woody getting axed? Go Knicks

Melo's probably the lone Knick that has really put in the work all season long. He's made mistakes, hasn't been smart at times. But he's the only player that has brought it every night.

That being said, he should really focus on being healthy and knowing what's up with his shoulder. It's help him make a better decision in how to continue treatment.

I dont think I can watch the rest of the games.

melo has a possible max contract coming up if he opts out so that most likely has something to do with his decision, of course melo says he's willing to take less to stay in ny, lets see how that statement sounds when the time comes.

While the tough it out attitude is appreciated, refusing medical testing isn't a wise move. Getting an MRI isn't invasive and would aid in treatment. Melo did the same thing last year with his knee and didn't want it drained because he didn't like needles. Who does?

I'm starting to think that everyone is right about you being a faker and not a Knicks fan. Just here trolling.

@darealeric I don't know about Dolan but based on his teammates, no one knew about Melo shoulder injury in the Wiz game.   He didn't tell his coach so that a possibly better play good be drawn up and yet he goes straight to the media afterwards and tell them that his shoulder blew out several times in the game and that was the reason why he had so many turnovers.

The mindset there seem to be more about his image rather than doing the smart thing and alert his coach for starters.

Right, his only job is scoring and his teammates have to do everything else and get blamed for not being good enough.

@Anti_u Lebron,Wade,KD,Kobe..ect...have all missed not making the playoffs in their careers.  Melo might miss it this year...FOR THE FIRST TIME....under achieving team..period.

@Anti_u No shades of Willis Reed?

I agree especially in the weak East!  But we have problems in many places.

@VerySilentJay Melo does not play hard on both sides of the ball consistently but he does show up for games.

For me, any superstar making max dollars should show up to do their job.

We all do it and we make a lot less probably.

@Biggie  Warrior, but this is foolish, because you are potentially worsening a shoulder for a lost season.

Phil Jackson didn't take less did he? For carrying the Knicks the past two years Dolan should pay him twice the $100 million he paid Allan Houston to do nothing!

@Knicks_FanaticMelo is stubborn and tough. He doesn't seem to trust docs much. There are a lot of people who don't like being probed and prodded until they absolutely have to be.

@Biggie @Sandro GuedesLOL  The great Willis Reed, injured,  decided to show up for a reg season game where we were already basically out of the playoffs.

@zdiddy4nyk LOL Tried to pass the ball?

So being unsuccessful at passing is not Melo's fault either!  SMGDH lol

@VerySilentJay. Best news I've heard year. Thanks :)

That's ok though, he can use the hundred million he already has for NOT leading his team into the playoffs in the worst conference in decades, to heal his fake shoulder injury.

xmenreturn

@Biggie @VerySilentJay It says he's not smart but rather cares about his image more.

Remember when N8 used to come out in the beginning of the season to tell everyone that the team will play hard all season and make them proud.

Melo cares more about his image and that is a huge reason why he never tried to get Woody out of here or got up in players faces.

That comment you made about Melo is a true troll comment. Just saying.

Man, Biggie is like that big black Linc Navigator that turn the corner and come down your block, and you are like that little chihuahua that sit on the porch and wait for it to drive by so that you can chase it down the block. You don't want to catch it you just want the driver to hear you barking! I don't know what institution your at but you need more help than you are getting!

Fake shoulder injury?

You sound like someone who never had the guts to even step on a court and you calling out a superstar? I would pay a couple of c-notes to have you match up against me on the court, "A FENCE COURT!" I would have you calling me daddy until I let you leave!

xmenreturn

@Biggie WOW!  I surely can see what he told the media after the Wiz game and how no one stated they knew he had  shoulder injury during the game.

Stay out of the showers Biggie!  There's a better way to see things!  Try common sense!
