The Giants will be entertaining WR/KR Julian Edelman tomorrow. With WR a position of strength, what could they want with the Patriots’ jack-of-all-trades?
With David Wilson taking more snaps at RB, he may be asked to scale back his kick returner duties. Their punt return position remains wide open as well. In short, the Blue needs help at both returner positions.
The Giants are specifically looking for more production from the punt returners. They only returned 20 punts in 2012. Rueben Randle had 15 and the now departed Domenik Hixon had five. Both averaged 7.2 yards per return.
Edelman may be more daring, waiving off fair catches to gain positive yards. He averaged 15.5 yards per return on 17 attempts with a long of 68 and a TD…..but, like all free agents, Edelman is seeking a maximum payday.
Tom Curran of CSNNE says Edelman may be expecting more $$$ then teams are willing to offer:
Injuries and the resulting lack of resume make Edelman a player to be wary of.
The Giants’ interest has to seem a glass of water in a desert of disinterest for Edelman. And each passing day the 26-year-old wide receiver/returner remains unsigned on the free agent market, the more likely it becomes he’ll return to the Patriots.
The reasoning? If Edelman isn’t finding money or a team willing to commit to him on the open market in 2013, it makes sense for Edelman to return to New England for the short-term, take less than he hoped and then hit the market when he’s closer to a position of strength.
