John Fennelly, Lead WriterThe Giants reduced their roster to 75 players yesterday. No real surprises, including LB Aaron Curry, who never really got untracked here at camp. The Giants will play the Patriots in Foxborough on Thursday night, then hone their roster down to the required 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
What to expect this week…
DE Jason Pierre-Paul should come off PUP before Saturday. DT Markus Kuhn will probably not. He will likely be transferred over to the regular season PUP list. The Giants may seek to acquire or sign a veteran safety to backfill the void left by the loss of Stevie Brown. They have some extra pieces on the defensive line and either Curtis Painter or David Carr to use in a trade.
S Will Hill is suspended for the first four games of the season. For the record, he must be included on the 53-man roster first, then placed on the suspended list. That is, if the Giants plan on keeping him, which we believe they do.
The 53-man roster will include nine players who are either returning from – or still battling – injuries: S Antrel Rolle (ankle), WR Victor Cruz (heel), OL David Diehl (thumb), C David Baas (knee), WR Louis Murphy (leg), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back), DE Damontre Moore (shoulder), CB Corey Webster (knee, groin) and FB Henry Hynoski (knee).
Throw in Terrell Thomas (hamstring), OL Chris Snee (hip) and WR Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) who returned to action two weeks ago and the Giants are looking at 20% of their roster either rehabbing or still hurting.
WR Ramses Barden (knee) will most likely be a roster casualty, especially if he doesn’t play this week. Keep in mind, he garnered no interest in free agency earlier this year and the Giants will be risking little by cutting him. RB Da’Rel Scott has had a flat camp, and may finally played his way off this team. Injuries and a fumble on his only touch against the Jets will make it easy for the Giants to part ways with him.
Larry Donnell will make the club only if the Giants carry four TEs. With Hynoski returning, Bear Pascoe reverts back to his TE role, so Donnell may find himself on the practice squad again.
OL Eric Herman, the Giants seventh-round selection in this year’s draft, will probably end up on the practice squad as well.
Hard players to cut…
LB Kyle Bosworth has played very well on special teams and defense. He will probably make the team. CB Charles James is a gamer who can also be used as a returner. CB Trumaine McBride is a veteran the Giants brought in to compete and he has certainly done that. DT Marvin Austin has finally turned the corner on his career, but many think his surge could be too little, too late. WR Kevin Hardy did not play on Saturday, but he has shown he can hang with NFL corners.
