2014 NFL Free Agency: Giants unlikely to land C Alex Mack

Lots of babbling on the net about the Giants making a play for impending free agent C Alex Mack this March….

From Rotoworld, via ESPN: “Mack, 28, will likely be the Browns’ top priority and could be franchise-tagged, but CEO Joe Banner may not believe in doling out that kind of cash to a center. Mack is going to be a hot commodity on the open market and is easily the top center available in free agency — he graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 1 center in 2013. He’ll probably aim for a deal similar to the one Ryan Kalil signed with the Panthers at six years and $49.1 million with $19 million guaranteed. Mack has previously said he’ll give the Browns a chance to match any offer, though that was before the coaching staff was fired after one season.”

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Let’s preface this by saying it only holds water if the Giants are finished with Davis Baas as their starting center. And even if they are, their choices are limited. Mack won’t last a week on the street. Half the league will be gunning for this guy. If the Giants want Mack, they’d have to strike quick.

But there’s problem with that….

It’s no secret Bass’ 2014 cap number is $8.225 million and is a prime candidate to be cut.

As per the Star-Ledger, Baas’ cap hit would be $6.45  million if cut before June 1st as opposed to $3.225 million if cut after. A savings of $1.775 million vs a savings of $5 million. If they want Mack, they’d have to cut Baas in March, take a bath in dead money (to the tune of $6 mil) and still have to pay Mack a fortune. Bad business.

Translation: Baas is staying put for now.

With all the holes the Giants have to fill this offseason, they can’t afford to be gobbling up cap space with dead money. The Giants will have to sit this one out, victims of the bad contract they engaged in with Baas in 2011. Too bad, because Mack would be a great fit for them…

The Giants could cut Baas after June 1st and then pursue free agents with $5 mil they realize from that, but who knows who will be left at that time?

The Giants could still designate Baas as a post June cap casualty - and cut him now.  Sure, it means they don't get relief until June, but they can still get the benefit of it.

It just means they would need to be a little creative in the contract negotiation - and may need to redo a deal or two.

Jerry- that's why you are paid the big bucks.  Make it happen

Baas is one of the worst FA signings ever.  He was a bum in SF and no one wanted him.  No idea what Reese saw in him and why he gave him that ridiculous contract.

I see the Giants pursuing a Tackle and/or a guard in free agency over a center. Of course, anything is possible and free agency centers such as Brian De La Puente of the Saints and Evan Dietrich-Smith of the Packers would be worth a look. Look for the Giants to draft a center (between rounds 3-6) in the upcoming draft. There aren't projected 1st rounders, but plenty of gifted ones in the later rounds.

I'd say keep Boothe at Center this Year go after Albert maybe and move Pugh to Guard n draft a Young G in the 3 rd round or you could keep Pugh at Tackle n Pick up a FA Guard still we need to Draft a G n pick up a G in FA or Center but we need lBs n a Star CB to play with prince also we lack depth at WR with Nicks gone

Two possible free agent centers i wouldn't mind seeing the Giants make a play for at are Brian De La Puente of the Saints and Evan Dietrich-Smith of the Packers, both guys started every game for their teams, are still pretty young and will be a cheaper option than Mack, i'm sure both their teams will try to make a play for them as well but if they did hit the open market they could be a great pickup for big blue.

Would the Giants not be able to afford signing Mack without cutting Baas first? Would it be possible to sign Mack and still wait till after June 1st to cut Baas and then use that money to sign additional FAs later to fill other holes?

@Jeff Comerford ....  Cutting Baas now would give the Giants less leverage in signing a replacement FA center, so that's something Giants fans should not expect to happen prior to the signing of an actual FA center. Once a center is signed, Baas could be given his walking papers at that time or told to accept a more club friendly deal and kept around for competition and roster depth.

@Brian Webster Yes it is possible, but by not making a move on Baas in March, signing Mack will blow up their cap. Not sure they want to do that. Especially this year.

@SNYGiantsHow would that be different though? Doesn't the cap only matter come training camp?

And there's also the possibility of picking up a center in the draft. I've seen it written in a number of place that they might be targeting that kid from Arkansas. Not signing Mack doesn't necessarily mean they're keeping Baas around another year, imo anyway.

@Serge Marinkovic @espirence I agree with you for  the same amount of money Mack would cost might as well get  a primo tackle. Additionally I would get a FA guard because there are some real maulers and also same cost as the Packers center. For center yes I agree resign Boothe but also its been said that Pugh could play center. If he were to work out you'd probably have an all pro center. Now with Snee being a wild card it maybe a good idea to keep Bass but creatively rework his contract and can still save the $3mm. Bass if healthy is a better center then Boothe and maybe we can get 2 years out of him but if we feel strongly that Pugh can be our center then possibly cut him post June 1.

As for the rest of the offense 1st of all I love the new coaching moves but I think we need one more receiving threat. If we can get that TE Eric Ebron he'd be perfect if not there's three killer wide receivers in the draft anyone of those 3 would be great and in FA only Hicks and Maclin. So out of those 6 players we need one of them. Now add Wilson to the mix (i don't care what they say he's coming back) and that offense will be loaded.

Additionally Eli is going to be fantastic in this offense. He's always had the best no huddle 2 minute drill stats, he'll know that new offense inside out, Macadoo n Lansford will have Eli's fundamentals humming again. Eli with that offennse and the additional personnel  will be lights out

Defense you got to re-sign Tuck can u imagine how good he would have been if JPP was JPP last year. We might have to bite the bullet let Josephs walk and go with Hankins resign Patterson. Obviously must sign Beeson. We need one more dominant player either a cornerback or linebacker. BTW I think T Thomas will  be even better next year and startting CB opposite Prince. We  have 3 outstanding Safety's so one more dominant player LB or CB is needed which ever one we can get.

And that's a wrap

@espirence Thank you for clearing that up... you should apply for the moderator position

@espirence Thank you your conclusion was the same as mine.  Why he made that foolish mistake is beyond me but Mack isn't necessary the Packers center is more than good enough and is 27 or 28 too.  I go with the packers center and then sign Albert to a big contract.  He is 29 but a 5 year deal for 48 million and 22-26 guaranteed should do it.  Albert,  Smith Boothe, then on the right side Snee and Pugh.  Thats probably 10 million and 6 for Smith or for 16 million  investment and have a line that will surrender 20 or less sacks/season. Then use the draft for a CB, WR and RB and we are set.  Five players needed assuming Snee is back.  Two FA and three from the draft and we win 11 games next two seasons barring catastrophic injuries.

@SNYGiants @Eddie_Dean The Giants are currently under the cap and there's no way between now and March 11 they can get over the cap. The premise of John's article is totally unsound because we don't need to cut Bass prior to signing Mack or any FA as were already under the cap and if we go over the cap during FA-after Mar 11 we have until the next cap deadline date (I think in August)  to make cuts and adjust contracts as to get back under it

@Eddie_Dean @SNYGiants The cap is in force during the free agency period. All teams must be under the cap by March 11, when free agency begins. The Giants won't see the Baas money taken off the cap until they cut him in June
